Inside the FIFA World Cup 2026 Social Wins

Discover how OpenAI generated $80.9M in EMV, why Erling Haaland gained 29.6M followers, and the top white-space brand opportunities from World Cup 2026.

Overview

After six weeks, the FIFA World Cup 2026 wrapped on Sunday, crowning Spain the undeniable winning team.

The tournament drew a record-breaking 6.8 million fans to stadiums, and even more eyes tuned in each week across the globe. In the UK, The BBC reported a reach of 42.8 million across TV viewing and 237 million streams, while more than 1.7 billion unique viewers globally watched World Cup-related videos on YouTube. At a time when attention is fragmented across a constant stream of content, the World Cup remains one of the few events that truly brings people together. That's why brands want in.

With more teams competing than ever, plus the addition of hydration breaks and a first-of-its-kind halftime show, brands had more touchpoints than any previous tournament to make their mark. As a result, Lefty data recorded $278 million in Earned Media Value (EMV), generated by 72 brands tracked across tech, sportswear, F&B, beauty and more. To achieve this visibility, many brands sought out the tournament's star players, but new faces broke through too: Erling Haaland's infectious personality, Jude Bellingham becoming a national treasure, and the underdog story of Cape Verde's goalkeeper, Vozinha, who stood firm against a heavyweight Argentina side.

Argentina's players, in fact, made it the most visible team on social media by EMV, collectively generating $872M. But EMV only tells part of the story. We teamed up with our partner agency Karla Otto to look at brand and player performance across social media, and to flag the white-space opportunities brands can build into their next sports strategy.

Top Brand Partnerships

While sportswear staples like Nike, Adidas, and Puma secured broad visibility through multi-player rosters, strategic single alignments allowed non-traditional entrants to dominate the overall leaderboard. Here is how the top brand partnerships ranked by EMV:

OpenAI Generated More Than Nike, Adidas and Puma Combined

Throughout the tournament, tech innovation and AI were highly prominent, powering real-time match analytics through advanced software, while sensors embedded in the match balls delivered more precise performance data.

The bigger shift, however, was cultural. This was the first World Cup where AI tools were readily available to fans themselves. In a space where fans already show their allegiance through fantasy leagues, video games, or simply dressing in team colours, AI gave them a new way to participate in the moment.

No one captured that better than OpenAI. To promote ChatGPT’s image generation, the company partnered with one of the tournament’s biggest stars, Messi. The campaign video shows the player generate an image of himself with his hair dyed in his team’s colours, spelling out the prompt to use on the platform. The result was the single top-performing campaign of the tournament, across every category. One Instagram post generated $80.9M in EMV, more than the social performance of key players Nike, adidas and Puma combined.

New Attitudes Towards Men’s Skincare Present a White-space

Beauty and Wellness brands, in comparison, generated a smaller $10.6M in EMV. The category was largely driven by Gillette and L'Oréal Men Expert, though even those were single-market activations, rather than global rollouts.

As men’s beauty and wellness become less stigmatised, male consumers are more likely than women to increase their spend in the category, as per Karla Otto’s Wellness report. This is creating space for emerging brands to shake up the traditional advertising blueprint of beauty and wellness products. For instance, Onside, a new brand backed by NBA All-Star Jayson Tatum, is positioned less about grooming and more about men's personal care optimised for movement. Through a partnership with Jude Bellingham timed around the World Cup, the brand entered the space with a strong $1.9M in EMV.

Younger players like Bellingham and Erling Haaland are known for pushing back on traditional norms of masculinity, openly rejecting the ‘macho athlete’ stereotype. For men’s beauty brands, aligning with them offers a way into a still relatively uncrowded space, at a moment when men's attitudes are visibly shifting.

Erling Haaland: Social Media’s Sweetheart

In six weeks, Haaland won over global audiences with his personality as much as his football. He led Norway to a historic quarterfinal finish while scoring seven tournament goals, but it was his charisma off the pitch – and a bromance story with Bellingham – that resonated most strongly with Gen Z.

Unedited locker-room selfies, Snapchat filters, a cowboy outfit during Norway's stop in Dallas, self-deprecating meme replies: Haaland treated social media as an extension of his personality. That approach reached millions of fans on TikTok and Instagram who don't typically follow football, turning him into an internet personality whose relevance extends well beyond the sport.

His second best-performing brand campaign after Nike's came via Chinese tea brand Walovi, which leaned into his playful personality, generating $1.1M in EMV, as per Lefty data. This campaign went viral because it was unexpected but entirely true to who he is naturally on social media.

Younger audiences increasingly expect unfiltered access to the people they follow, especially on platforms like Snapchat built around real-time, informal content. Brands that can let Haaland be himself, rather than scripting his output, stand to gain the most.

Top FIFA World Cup Players by Follower Growth

Follower growth reveals where long-term influence is heading. Beyond the biggest names, the tournament also helped a new wave of players grow their audiences. From Erling Haaland's Gen Z appeal to Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha who saw a massive spike in his social following, standout performances quickly turned into lasting fan growth. IShowSpeed: The Power of a Culturally Relevant Influencer

Beyond the pitch, the 2026 Final cemented the World Cup’s shift into a global entertainment spectacle. Its centerpiece, the halftime show, generated $50.5M in EMV, accounting for nearly half the Final’s total social value and proving the commercial power of blending elite sport with pop culture.

EMV per Key Moment, $

True to the host country's tradition, the Final became an entertainment-filled extravaganza, with performances from Madonna, BTS and Justin Bieber. Lefty data shows the most impactful performer of them all was IShowSpeed, who tops our list of the top football content creators to watch, with over 50M followers across Instagram and TikTok combined, and nearly 60M on YouTube. Over the years, he’s also dabbled in music, releasing unofficial anthems for the tournament. His track ‘Champions’, released in early June 2026, went viral quickly enough that FIFA added it to the tournament's official album – the same song he performed at the closing ceremony.

When looking at the overall social footprint, the Final set a new high-water mark for global sporting events. Across all tracked brand, player, and performance activations, match day generated a staggering $104M in EMV and accumulated 1.04 billion impressions. More importantly, content around the Final achieved an average engagement rate of 6.2%, an exceptionally high figure for an event of this scale, proving that the integration of halftime entertainment, creator culture, and world-class football actively mobilized fans rather than just reaching them passively.
